How to Get to Shifen Old Street From Taipei

Step 1: Taipei Main Station to Ruifang Station

From Taipei Main Station, ride TRA to Ruifang Station. The fare is NTD49/PHP86.00 and the travel time is about an hour. Do not forget to frequently check the station you are in to avoid missing the stop at Ruifang Station.

Step 2: Ruifang Station to Shifen Station

From Ruifang Station, proceed to the ticketing counter and hop on to the train going to Shifen Station. Fare is NTD19/PHP33.00.

Shifen Old Street Food Crawl

As I have mentioned earlier, Shifen Old Street is a place for binge eating as food stalls are everywhere. Aside from food stalls, you can find souvenir shops alike. Since it’s literally a street, the price of food are not that expensive too. You can find cheap street food ranging from NTD40-100 just like in any Taipei night markets.

We found a local ice cream called the Peanut Roll Ice Cream. It’s an Ice Cream stuffed with crushed peanut brittle and then rolled in a lumpia wrapper for NTD50/PHP88.00. Highly recommend this!

Fly a Sky Lantern

Sky lanterns have been a very famous activity to do when in Taiwan. And it is done at either Shifen Old Street or at Pingxi Old Street. Approaching Shifen Station you can already see the sky lanterns from the window of your train. If you are interested in doing it, there are lots of stores in the street offering this service.

The price of releasing a sky lantern costs NTD150/PHP265.00 each. And before you release the sky lantern, you’ll get the chance to paint and write your wishes around the lantern. Photos and video assistance on your phone are included when you buy a sky lantern at Shifen Old Street.

The iconic old railway is the reason why lots of tourists go to this place. It’s the video you see online where the train passes by a very narrow railway filled with stalls on each side. The railway is where people releases lanterns too so it gets pretty busy when the trains are away.

Walk Towards Shifen Waterfalls

Also known as the little Niagara Falls of Taiwan. You can actually walk from Shifen Old Street to Shifen Waterfalls! It’s about 15-25 minutes walk to get there, you can follow the way on Google Maps or you can simply follow the people walking towards it. You’ll pass by 2 hanging bridge before getting here.

Did you know? You can also see the Shifen Waterfalls from outside your train window if you are coming from Ruifang Train Station.

Entrance to this attraction is FREE. Moreover, there are food stalls near the waterfalls where you can buy cold refreshments and snacks. There are comfort rooms available too.
